Hiking, Camping and Backpacking

There are many Awesome places we visit locally.

The Ramapo Reservation is right here in Mahwah.  We do day hiking trips through the many trails that criss-cross the Ramapo Mountians.  For local backpacking trips we will start out at the Reservation and backpack to local camps like Camp Glen Gray, and the Cub camp that many of our Scouts have attended, Camp Yaw Paw.

Bear Mountain State Park sits just above the Hudson River.  With its miles and miles of hiking trails we can easily do 5 or 10 mile hikes.

The picturesque Harriman State Park in New York.  With destinations like the Lemon Squeeze and Eagle's Rock we are never at a loss for adventure.

Whether it is backpacking through Harriman State Park, or a day hike through the Reservation there is always some adventure, learning, and fun.

High Adventure

Troop 258 works to plan a High Adventure Scout trip each summer.  We have hiked 100+ miles during a 2 week Philmont Scout Ranch trek, sea kayaked in the Outer Banks of NC at Pamlico River Base, sailed on the Chesapeak Bay at CHASE, canoed through the New York Adirondacks at Floodwood, and sailed and fished the Florida Keys at Florida’s Sea Base

Community Service

A corner stone of the Boy Scouts of America is giving back to others.  For rank advancement Scouts must perform community service.  Some of the project we have worked on are:

    * Visit the VA Hospital on bingo day, helping and playing bingo with the Vets
    * Trail and bench building at Carmel Retreat in Mahwah
    * Refurbrish the boat house, phone booth, dining hall at Camp Glen Gray
    * Cleaned up the historic Mahwah Cemetery
    * Built a ramp and deck at the Mahwah Train Station Museum
    * Built a Bocce Court at the Wyckoff YMCA
    * Refurbrished and built picnic tables, and landscaping at GW School
    * Built a new section of the Appalachian Trail at Bear Mountain State Park
    * Created a movie to increase Disability Awareness
    * Participate in the Town-wide Clean-up Day

Summer Camp

Troop 258 spends 1 week out of each summer at Camp NoBeBoSco.  While there, Scouts work on requirements and Merit Badges for advancement.
