Memorial Day Service

Our troop has honored our military each Memorial Day by participating in the Memorial Day Service at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. The boys assist by acting as ushers, passing out brochures, cleaning up after the service, carrying the gifts, and helping to lead the flag salute.

Community garden

We adopt a flower bed in the local parks.  The scouts plan the layout, plant the flowers, weed, and water.  They assist in the community garden, and are building beds as well as helping to distribute harvested plants to local food banks.  This is a good communal experience and there Is much to learn by this activity.

Post Office Food Drive

The US Postal Service has collected 1.1 Billion pounds of food since 1992. On Saturday, May 11th, Troop 1373 helped with the largest food drive of the nation. Our boys collected food in Hickory Hills as they traveled throughout Hickory Hills picking up bags of food on the residents’ doorsteps. Later that afternoon, the boys spent about 4hours at the Moraine Valley Postal Facility unloading collected bags of food from postal vehicles. They also helped pass out the food collected to the seven food pantries who were waiting to load their vehicles.

The Office said that over 14,000 lbs of food was donated by residents of the 100 postal routes . Later, another 600 lbs was picked up at the North Riverside Post Office. It was transported to Elsie’s pantry by three members of the Troop. The lady at the Elsie's pantry was very excited and grateful .

Great job Troop 1373! We helped a lot of needy people get some food.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Since 2013 our Troop has volunteered for the Special Olympics Spring Games held at Thornwood High School.  Troop 1373 is the only boy scout troop to volunteer at Special Olympics. In 2015, our troop participated in the Opening Ceremony by leading the parade carrying the American Flag and our troop flag.  It is truly a wonderful experience for the scouts and adults to be able lend our support and help with all the special Olympians who participate in the games.
